Build:

Samsung Star is a touchscreen phone with solid build. Its quite light and the phone is rectangular with rounded edges.

Three hardware buttons are provided, one for call, one for end call and one for back. The back of the phone has a dotted design which helps in gripping the phone.

On the right side, a camera and lock key are provided. And on the left side, volume keys and a port for charger/headphone/data cable is provided.

Screen:

Samsung Star has got a 3 inch screen with a resolution of 240400 which is one of its main advantages.

The screen technology is resistive, not capacitive so it requires a bit more pressure but its not an issue. Its responsive and there are no lag issues.

The colors are crisp and clear, and I was very pleased with the image quality on the phone.

Menu:

With Samsung Star you can have three home screens which you can slide left/right to access. You can put different widgets on it. The provided widgets include stuff like calendar, clock, Wifi, Bluetooth etc.

The widgets appear in a vertical tray that can be accessed by tapping anywhere on the screen. In the menu, all the regular options are provided; there is also an extended menu, which is subdivided into three parts, communication, multimedia and tools.

Features:

One of the features of the Samsung Star is gesture unlock. Basically you can draw any character on the screen and it can either unlock the phone or launch apps or even dial a contact. Neat feature.

Another plus for the Samsung Star is the inclusion of Wifi. Browsing on the big screen is a pleasure. The phonebook is great and has all the features you expect it to have. Calling is also good, the quality is good and the virtual dialer works well. The phone boasts FM compatibility too.

The photo viewer can be launched whenever you open a folder with images, you can sweep your fingers across the screen to browse the images. Another thing is the support for Excel, PowerPoint and PDF documents. The panning is quite slow though.

Texting:

Texting on the Samsung Star is great. You can either have a normal number pad, a QWERTY keyboard when you tilt the phone (its got a built in accelerometer) or you can just write on the screen with the provided stylus as it has handwriting recognition. The QWERTY keyboard is comfortable and once you get used to it, messaging on it is a breeze.

Sound quality:

The sound quality of the Samsung Star is adequate. It is loud enough but the quality is just passable. The music player provides different options for equalizer settings and you can organize your music into playlists.

Camera:

Samsung Star has got a 3.2 MP camera, which has got a lot of good features including different shooting modes, scene modes and adjustment for white balance. The camera quality is good and its got a maximum resolution of 20481536. The camera lacks flash though. Shooting videos isnt much fun mostly because the maximum supported frame rate is 15fps.

Price:

The plain version of Samsung Star is available for around Rs. 9-10k depending on where you live and the Wifi version, which I reviewed here, is worth Rs. 10-11k depending on your location.

Conclusion:

Samsung Star a decent buy and provides good features for this price range. The inclusion of Wifi is a big plus. A recommended buy.
